Ukrainian and third-country nationals legally residing in Ukraine are granted temporary protection in Hungary.

  • Under the regulation, which enters into force from 24 February 2022 immediately, refugees from Ukraine are granted temporary protection under one section of the Asylum Act.

  • This applies to all Ukrainian citizens coming from the territory of Ukraine as well as to third-country nationals legally residing in Ukraine. Temporary protection is not the same as refugee status. Temporary protection can remain in force until 1 June, unless extended by government decree.

The National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing is a law enforcement body responsible for the entry and stay of foreign nationals in the territory of Hungary.
